About software

Microsoft Office XP was known in beta stage as Office 10 but is also known as Office 2002. This suite of Microsoft Office products is distributed by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows platform. This suite is the successor of Microsoft Office 2000 and the predecessor of Office 2003, can also be recognized with the name of ‘Office 10’, or its code name. In the USA, it was released March 5, 2001. It first made its way to European markets on August 4, 2001. The ‘Mainstream’support phase for Office XP came to an end on the 11th of July 2006. This was also the day that Windows 98/ME were discontinued. Extended support ended in July 2011. Office XP tools had the title “2002”, even though it was suffixed with “XP”. Word 2002 was, however, not Word XP.


The end to clippy

Microsoft Office XP’s advertising campaign highlighted the removal of Clippy & other Office Assistants from the default option. Microsoft was aware that they were not very popular and unused by users. These features were not eliminated completely until the 2007 edition.


Office XP & Windows XP

Microsoft Office XP was launched the same year that Windows XP. Despite the similar names, Office XP can be used with Windows XP as well as Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98 SE. Windows 2000 will also work with it. It is compatible with Windows Vista but not with Windows 7. It is not compatible with Windows 95 (the last compatible suite for Windows 95 is Office 2000)

Office XP is compatible with Windows 98SE/98SE, Me and NT 4.0. Service Pack 6 or later will be required.


Memory (RAM).

  • Windows XP requires 128 megabytes of RAM (MB) for the operating system and an additional 8MB for each Office program (e.g. Word) that is running simultaneously
  • Windows 2000 Professional: Windows 2000 Professional needs 64MB RAM and an additional 8MB RAM for each Office program running simultaneously (e.g. Word).
  • Windows Me and Windows NT 4.0 : 32MB RAM for Windows Me, plus 8MB RAM for each Office program, e.g. Word, that are running simultaneously
  • Windows 98SE or Windows 98: Windows 98 requires 24MB RAM to run the operating system. Each Office program (e.g. Word) must be running simultaneously with 8MB RAM.


Hard disk space

Hard disk space requirements will vary depending on configuration; custom installation choices will determine the space needed. The minimum hard disk space required for Office XP suites is listed below:

  • Office XP Standard: 210MB of available hard disk space
  • Office XP Professional Edition and Professional Special Edition: 245MB available hard drive space
  • An additional 115MB space is required on your hard disk to install the operating software. Users without Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, or Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) will need an extra 50MB of hard disk space for System Files Update.

Requirements to enable speech recognition

  • Pentium II 400MHz processor or higher
  • 128MB or more of RAM
  • Close-talk microphone
  • An audio output device
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x or later
